window shopping

yesterday morning we put up a window display in a bookshop in town for the ‘façade’ book, using the plastic letters i made for the book, and a sheet of unused and untrimmed flyers

the result is a bit messy but somehow seems to fit the idea of what the book is about, the final advertising billboard in the project (by erik kessels & hans aarsman) is coincidentally still hanging, right across the road on the university building, when this one is taken down it will be cut up and made into covers for the book too

the books are being hand numbered in a series of 500 by artist and writer ‘dick tuinder’, if you would like a copy visit ‘athenaeum’ bookshop in the centre of town, a bargain at €15…

diy ID

garech & declan better known as ‘the stone twins’ (currently heads of the communication department) have created a new identity for the ‘design academy’ in eindhoven, based around a rather serious letter ‘e’ (for eindhoven, geddit?) and which further relies on the currently highly popular ‘crowdsource’ principle: everyone can fill it as they please with three words

i’m really not sure what i think of this one… of course leaving it open feels (on paper) like a good idea, all possibilities are possible etc. but the actual result feels a bit stern and forced, the idea of using words was previously used in the temporary ‘stedelijk CS’ identity from experimental jetset and the handwritten words and primary colours also bear a passing resemblance (in my mind) to the ‘communication museum’ identity from lava, again a nice idea which didn’t really work in practice i feel…

the introduction films where passers-by are encouraged to react to the logo are quite amusing (don’t be fooled the english subtitles bear almost no resemblance to the actual reactions in most cases) of course it’s maybe a bit early to say how this one will actually pan-out in practice, time will tell… all possibilities are possible etc.

find something from nothing

anybody who builds websites will tell you that making an ‘under construction’ page is usually a bad idea for various reasons, having had a ‘me nothing’ button on this site months ago now i can only agree, the idea was that it would be temporary and soon changed to a useful new function, well it took longer than expected and often resulted in me receiving mails asking what the point of it was… erm ‘nothing’ was the only answer…

now finally it has gone and in it’s place is an all new ‘search me’ function… five years of inspiration, great design, photography and ideas from weird to wonderful and all fully searchable

go on… have a go, you might even find your own name listed, the search results are currently limited to five results (even if there are many more… we’re working on it) this should however soon be fixed… i now know for example that i use the term ‘shit’ more than i realised…

new work

shown below is the first in the new series of posters i am developing for my latest client: het muziektheater amsterdam (the amsterdam music theater) or ‘HMA’ in short

a tough gig this one, the identity (designed by agency ‘koeweiden postma’ last year) with it’s outspoken custom typeface was a ‘given’, and the brief was to redesign the posters… my main starting point is the fact that HMA only does approx. four productions a year and therefore doesn’t have much ‘exposure on the streets’, with so little ‘air’ time it is very important that the posters create a coherent look and help to establish the identity in the public’s mind… the solution was to create a strong and highly recognisable format (the red border & black band) as a means of binding the various productions (ballet and opera) together in a harmonious way…

the two image areas above and below can be used to mix images or use various crops and details from the same image to create a dynamic form and to give a ‘flavour’ of the show… i further chose to ‘tone down’ the custom typography which i felt was perhaps a bit too ‘loud’ in it’s expressiveness, plus using a narrower palette of fonts and tidying up the layout by placing the information all within the black band and dropping the amount of information shown, the average viewer will usually grant a poster on the streets less than 3 seconds viewing time… so too much in-depth information is pointless…

i felt that the identity’s own colour scheme (black & red) needed to be used more explicitly in the posters and it aims to reflect the dark ‘theatrical feeling’ of other channels such as the recently designed website by ‘fabrique’, i will be developing several other projects for them in the coming year as well as continuing to roll out the posters for the upcoming productions, shown here are also a number of the sketches made in the initial stages of the design

the red border in the final design has even been made slightly larger than i first intended, as it is a very important element in the whole ‘look & feel’, it is perhaps even the principle housestyle element, at least for the posters, the imagery is usually provided by the production companies themselves and it is therefore very ‘tricky’ to rely on good quality pictures as a main focus for the design, hence the dominant red border…

new books and the ‘best books’ book

it’s been a good week for books, my own latest book design ‘façade’ arrived back from the printers on friday and i attended the presentation of the dutch best book designs 2009 in the stedelijk museum on friday night, this is the book (shown above and designed by hansje van halem) and the book for which i was selected can be seen here (actually posted and designed more than a year ago, but it was entered into the competition by the publisher and not by me, i’ll admit i’m very proud of this as i’ve always wanted to have some of my work in that ‘best books’ book series which i rate very highly personally… that’s enough mentions of the word ‘book’ in one post although the following post may just also feature the ‘b’ word…
