me news

the people and the man

industrially, mass-produced giant busts and childrens toys are just some of the bizarre hitler memorabilia that are on show in a new exhibition that is due to open in berlin called ‘hitler and the german people’ the aim is to focus on the relationship between the führer and the people over whom he ruled, quite a step in a country where the swastika, mein kampf and the hitler salute are still forbidden, the curators have been careful not to include any objects that the man himself may have touched…

cold calling

just in time for the weekend some good news for (and from) me:

in my experience calling a (potential) client out-of-the blue generally isn’t a good idea or something that tends to work, however that’s exactly what i did recently when i noticed that a certain local firm is about to turn 100 years old, a fact which i felt shouldn’t be passed by easily…

it turns out that they agree with me and we are going to work together on (hopefully) a large poster campaign and a book plus all kinds of other activities to mark the event in the coming year… have a nice weekend!

icons of the post

i had another nostalgic look through my old postage stamp sketches this week as TNT Post contacted me because they want to add my stamp (dating back to 2008) to their online interactive exhibition iconen van de post in the near future, also including the preliminary design stuff…

it takes a while to figure out how the site works but there’s plenty of interesting old stuff to be found in there, if you are patient enough: like this funky one from the 70’s

the image in the middle is a quote from spanish writer & poet ‘cervantes’ which says: ‘the pen is the soul’s tongue’ which i liked because my pen drawing reminded me of a tongue somehow, which if i remember correctly is precisely why the client rejected it!

handle with care

…the only city in the world in which our exhibition encountered this sort of resistance, out of a list that includes much more problematic cities such as Tbilisi, Marrakech, Beirut and 5 cities in Iran including Tehran…

the posters for tomorrow exhibition which tackles the issue of the death penalty this year has fallen foul of a local council in belfast, ireland

it seems people found several of the the posters offensive, personally i find the death penalty quite offensive, but i guess it’s a question of priorities this one…

they are planning on organising an unauthorised street expo in belfast in response, who says posters can’t move people? the final selection will be published online on 10/10/10

temporary books

the ‘best dutch book design’ expo (featuring one of my books this year) will launch at the ‘temporary’ stedelijk museum next week, starting with an opening event where the accompanying publication will be presented on friday evening…

thankfully the design of the catalogue was in the competent hands of hansje van halem this year, a (very lo-res) sneak preview of the cover is shown above
