‘beguiling’ infographics

it’s not very often that graphic design gets a serious item on TV, let alone infographics or ‘data visualisation’ if you prefer the term… and it generally ends up being the sort of ‘non-topic’ which just baffles the general public:

what on earth are they talking about? who cares? this isn’t important… etc

this week new RCA head ‘neville brody’ and ‘david mccandless’ (from ‘information is beautiful’) clashed on the BBC newsnight
current affairs programme on that very subject: a lively comment discussion has also picked up on the CR blog, the BBC ‘iPlayer’ doesn’t unfortunately work outside the UK but without having heard the talk i kind of feel inclined to agree with neville brody… although i can just picture my mother watching this, shrugging her shoulders and thinking ‘boring’…

update: an amusing footnote to this story, point taken :)

knot easy

i’m currently working on a new string typography piece, this time for a stop-motion film and to make things more complicated, the scale is even smaller than last time and the font i need to build the wonderful ‘courier sans’ (from lineto) is very difficult to create properly using just pin points at this size…

still if my theory is correct it should look great, if not then it was still fun to make; a little faith goes a long way on days like these…

a room with a view (exit left)

after approximately a year and a half filling my walls with bits of paper or weird photos and getting nicely settled into my little ‘me’ office (with a fabulous view across the city) it’s time to pack up…. for those who didn’t know the old ABN AMRO bank building which houses hundreds of designers, photographers, musicians and similar types on the vijzelstraat is being shut down and demolished… sadly we have to be out of here by november the first… the world makes money go round it seems

my point is this: i am looking at several options for a new ‘me’ space but would be very interested to hear from anyone who has a tip or an offer for a new space (shared or separate) i don’t have a very big footprint (30 to 40 square meters) and i’m house-trained, thanks in advance for any interesting tips…

message carrier

yet another name that i was not familiar with: french graphic designer and illustrator/artist alain carrier, who is particularly remembered for his ‘humanitarian cause’ posters

here’s a selection of the posters and logos which caught my eye… the series on africa for ‘air afrique’ still look incredibly modern

many thanks to my mate ‘harm’ for pointing me towards this one, after visiting an exhibition currently taking place in sarlat, france

make maps

make maps…is a project by Adam Hayes featuring a selection of the most talented contemporary artists and illustrators.
Each artist has responded to the task of making a map of somewhere that they feel they belong. Responses can include maps of places they live or grew up in, maps of the future or even of fictional locations and even maps of nowhere…
