ghosts of amsterdam

here’s a nice little idea: a series of comped images: amsterdam at the end of the second world war and today superimposed together, which i find fascinating to look at, the execution isn’t terribly good but it works, in fact the first image directly here below is actually the exact view from my office window here on the vijzelstraat… strange to see it like this

history, rewritten

…i took my favorite book… and by removing words carved out a new story. It was hardly an original idea: it’s a technique that has, in different ways, been practiced for as long as there has been writing…

the ‘tree of codes’ book which i posted about earlier this month, has been reviewed by steven heller who has also interviewed the author on the why & how…

my own copy also arrived in the post today, it’s a fascinating object to hold and examine but the idea alone, of actually attempting to read it makes me feel tired…

german publishing house ‘gestalten’ have just launched a dedicated font site/shop, it is currently still in beta and the fonts aren’t cheap but there are a few ‘gems’ hidden in there…

before pamela anderson got there…

…beaches looked very different, a set of vintage pics providing insight into beach life over 100 years ago, that can’t have been much fun doing the crawl in a suit…

and while we’re on the subject of vintage photography, here’s a set of personal polaroids portraying the life of basquiat in the late eighties… but there’s really nothing very remarkable to see, the beach set is more fun…
