a new piece of work from perhaps one of the most interesting photographers at work in the netherlands, right now: anouk kruithof, she has a new exhibition opening today at the university in amsterdam and her new work ‘becoming blue’ is a series of portraits of people dressed in blue, shot with a timer whereby kruithof intervens to change the mood of the people being portrayed…

farmers

i first came across this striking series by young photographer ‘louise te poele’ back in 2008, made in a barn on a cold day, shot at night with a flash and some very harsh close-up crops, it portrays the people of a small rural community letting their hair down in a very uncompromising and unflattering manner, she has now published a very uncomprising and striking book of her ‘farmers’ series

the enormous format (difficult to see here) is almost a half meter tall (48cm) and the blemishes and yellowed teeth spring right out of the deep black pages at you… the book is worth getting hold of to experience the effect fully, scary and beautiful…
