school’s out

i spent the afternoon today, at design agency ‘koeweiden postma’ in amsterdam, helping young teenagers to design posters for a project as part of the weekend school together with alex (from design agency ‘lesley moore’), photographer ‘jaap stahlie’, my friend bas van der paardt & several others volunteers… like everyone else i felt it would be good to put some energy back into the business we all work in & live well by…

the kids were mostly thirteen, not the most academically bright ones and considering i have absolutely no qualifications to teach (let alone to kids with learning difficulties) it was a bit of an eyeopener for me!… i will post some of the pieces we made (in a very short time) when i have checked if that is ok…

the big sleep (image)

great little tip from ‘macfixit’ which i have just tried and regained 6GB of invisible unused space on my macbook pro, it does involve a terminal command, which i find very scary but trust me, it works…

sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage

In newer laptop models, Apple has implemented a hibernation sleep mode which will activate before all power is lost to the system (ie: the battery is about to die). When hibernation is activated, the computer will write all the contents of RAM to the disk in this "sleepimage" file, and then set the hardware to read the contents of this image back to RAM upon wakeup, before cutting all power to the system components and essentially shutting down the computer.

This is different from standard "sleep" mode, where RAM maintains its information and still draws power so the computer can more quickly start up.

Is it safe to delete?

Absolutely. The image will be recreated the next time your computer goes into hibernation mode, so if you are not regularly going into hibernation mode you can enter the following command in the Terminal to delete the file and free up some hard drive space (the image will be the same size as the amount of RAM in your system):

sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage

ok everybody…. take your clothes off now!

the american artist/photographer spencer tunick was in amsterdam this weekend to shoot a series of installations at secret locations, my girlfirned and i took part last night…

we were told to go to a multi-storey car park in town at 3.30 a.m.! and it was great fun…the main shot was taken on the circular ramps of the car-park involving 2000 people…

all of us men were then shot separately on the forecourt of a petrol station on our knees and the women on bicycles crossing a bridge over the canal… (yep my girlfriend is in that picture) we spent hours getting ready and the pictures were done very rapidly as the sun came up at dawn… the final result is being presented at a party tonight (sunday) and the images will be on show at the end of june somewhere in town, we have already managed to spot ourselves amongst the people in the car park picture above…

the final image (below) involving 17 people was done with a special (invisible) bridge of people across the ‘lijnbaansgracht’ canal

the middle and lower images have been ‘borrowed’ from online news sites, in the lower picture holding a camera is spencer tunick himself
