printed pleasure

i paid a quick visit to the grafisch geluk exhibition in hilversum (of all places) this week and it was well worth the trip, as long as amsterdam has to survive without (virtually) any museums at all, these kinds of events are very welcome

if you get the chance i can definitely recommend it, the exhibition features work from a great many dutch designers, from the latest generation dating back to a hundred years ago… and if you go on wednesday it is even free…

print is dead

i spent the afternoon yesterday talking to a group of photography students with my good friends, photographers ‘lukas göbel’ and ‘theo captein’ in the beautiful, old film museum building; it was, as usual, great to meet the next generation of creatives and talk about work and the future of our business

we gave a short talk about our own work and how we collaborate, then did a session looking at portfolios, one of the projects which ‘theo & luke’ showed was their short film ‘noord’, i’ve shown it before but i really like it so i’ll show it again…

oh by the way… print isn’t really dead, at least not the last time i checked…

satellite

…i collect things that I’ve cut out from Google Satellite View- parking lots, silos, landflls, waste ponds. The view from a satellite is not a human one, nor is it one we were ever really meant to see…

some fabulous surreal collections of ‘found objects’ from artist jenny odell, enjoy… (via mister ‘jarr’ on FB)

almost nothing in the natural world

really interesting article on the future (or demise) of interactivity in technology and in our lives…

…pictures Under Glass is an interaction paradigm of permanent numbness. It’s a Novocaine drip to the wrist. It denies our hands what they do best. And yet, it’s the star player in every Vision Of The Future…

…the next time you make a sandwich, pay attention to your hands. Seriously! Notice the myriad little tricks your fingers have for manipulating the ingredients and the utensils and all the other objects involved in this enterprise. Then compare your experience to sliding around Pictures Under Glass…

google nothing

inspiring article by steven heller on the power of ‘real’ research…

…at no time shall Google or any search engine be used to either locate or research the objects, unless . . . well, actually, there is a loophole, but the students have to solve that riddle for themselves. Of course after the class is all over, the students can Google to their heart’s content. But I guarantee they will agree that Google will never replace hands-on involvement or (hint, hint) befriending a truly enthusiastic librarian…
