me news

sweaty palms

i have been asked to do a short lecture/presentation at the HKU art school in utrecht next monday, the theme is ‘self confidence’ and i’m already nervous… i usually spend my time safely hidden behind a large monitor when talking to the rest of the world… which gives me an idea…

the other talks are from talented designer ‘herman van bostelen’ and young start up ‘hoax’ (whom i taught at the HKU last year) looking forward to hearing them both

mind the lads #6

for those of you who were around (and those who weren’t) when we first organised ‘mind the gap’ back in october 1996, you may remember that the first (and by far the best, so far) edition featured the rat-pack of british designers from that period: ‘tomato’, ‘fuel’, my old hero ‘peter saville’, ‘the designers republic’, ‘north’ and ‘me company’, we sold all 800 tickets for the afternoon (@ legendary venue ‘paradiso’) in record time & the event still gets mentioned regularly by those who managed to get a seat in the packed hall…

ali barber and the fourty haircuts

london-based photographer richard nicholson spends his time (in his own words) …working for magazines, shooting personal projects, and doing nothing…

for example this project documenting the clients of ‘ali’s barber shop’ in london… more info can be read in the following article east-end cuts

some ‘dude’ is posing as me on the message board

sites where illustration and hand lettering is used extensively or even exclusively are few and far between, ones where it is done well are even scarcer, this one does just that…

the tone of voice, the content, the illustration style and the way the information has been placed just all seems right in my opinion, it’s a breath of fresh air in terms of the browsing experience for me, no… it wouldn’t work for lots of things and it does get tiring after say five minutes or so, but for a brief visit it simply works…

oh yeah… and the most surprising thing is who owns the website and has made all of the illustrations & hand lettering, it’s the ‘dude’ himself a.k.a. the actor jeff bridges

often when celebrities decide to do ‘something else’ creative it can be embarrassingly awful, in this case much like the actor ‘yul brynner’ (see yesterdays post) it does feel very authentic
