me news
water on glass
a cover design i made for a novel arrived back from the printers this week, not really new work but an update to an older piece of work, the novel is a dutch translation of an american novel set in the 1930’s during the depression in kentucky USA
a fairly traditional cover i know, but that was the publishers brief… the cover image is an archive stock image which i printed out, placed under a sheet of glass, sprayed with water drops and re-shot to create the desired layered effect an distorted type, i added some detailing to the water drops using a spot UV varnish on the matte laminate which worked really well, i initially tried to make some type using pices of broken glass (the title of the novel) but this was too obvious i felt… a large part of the novel takes place during rainstorms so the reference seemed more apt and somewhat less direct
this new paperback edition was very low budget so the spot varnish has now gone, the colour shift to purple (photoshop + a bit of guess work) worked suprisingly well however…
dreamweaver
…on five pages there are illustrations made out of thread. Their shape and colour relies on the key words on the opposite page. This way an abstract image of the dream about dreaming is generated. In addition there are five pages where a significant excerpt from a text of the opposite page is stitched into the paper. It is not legible because the type’s actual surface is inside the folded page. This expresses the mysteriousness of dreams and the aspect of dream interpretation…
beautiful book project ‘traumgedanken’ on dreams and consciousness with elaborate ‘tactile’ threads connecting and hyperlinking information across the pages, a final year design school project made by german student maria fischer
(thanks to ‘eierkoeken-thijs’ for the tip)
washing instructions
…this pocket-sized book offers all there is to know when disaster strikes and how to live comfortably during climate change…
designer ruben pater sent me this little project he has recently completed: in a country such as the netherlands people have more than a passing interest in global warming and water levels, a large part of the nation is actually below sea level and although the government has compiled instructions as to what to do should large-scale flooding occur they have surprisingly never been implemented or published…
he decided to correct this omission and has produced a pocket sized cute ‘official’ manual explaining what to do before your knees get wet… (see english summary)
type player 2
a new book entitled type player 2 arrived in the post this week featuring two of our projects, published by ‘ginko press’ in china, the book is nicely made and well researched, although a few of the projects i noticed are clearly bad rip-offs from better known work by other designers… i guess it’s time i stopped allowing people to publish the ‘suikerdepôt’ identity however, it’s been in so many books in the past few years and is already more than four years old, time to move on…
