rhyming lessons in the phone shop

many thanks to my ex-intern pollie for the copy of her graduation book, her idea was to choose a small area of amsterdam with a large number of small shops, she interviewed the owners and tried to ascertain their hidden skills i.e. any talents they had or services they offer that are not related to their line of business

in this way she documented an invisible network of skills and stories from the neighbourhood which was then compiled into an unofficial yellow pages of the residents

a lucky find in a bookshop last week: books! a celebration of the book; a beautiful, typical ‘carnaby street’ style 1960’s production illustrated by artist john alcorn and printed in three dazzling fluorescent colours, so well made that it still looks new…


the eclectic typography and humorous ‘victorian’ style of his work was later adapted to great effect by ‘monty python’ amongst others…

outcast editions

a series of interactive digital books on contemporary residential architecture designed by (former ‘8vo’ partner) ‘hamish muir’

the books contain a mix of photographs, video and architectural drawings combined in a slick, monochromatic touchscreen interface; i havent tried them yet so can’t really comment on the experience or content as yet… ‘unit editions’ have also recently interviewed hamish

IdN magazine have recently released a special on information graphics, will we ever tire of bar charts with funky colours and wave patterns or cool icons explaining how everything works? or doesn’t work, probably not…
