the sound of gigaflops

dutch photographer ‘anno pieterse’ asked himself what the internet ‘looks like’, i mean really looks like and this is what he saw… a fascinating and lifeless void, where colourful cables and dull boxes alternate between monotonous repetition and chaos

his two series data and transport both received an ‘honourable mention’ in the charmingly named ‘deeper perspective’ category at this year’s ‘international photo awards’… be prepared to exercise your scroll finger

this post is adpated from one i wrote for design blog ‘fontanel’

synthetic wood

…long grain, end grain, lino, mdf, cardboard, plexiglas, structure, halftone and hairline…

this fascinating (swiss) project website woodtype now details a whole range techniques that can be used to replicate the look, feel and behaviour of old wooden type blocks using modern materials and a laser cutter amongst other things… i need to make time to have a good look through this one…

is typography an art?

…that’s like asking if photography is an art. Certainly there are photographers and typographers whose ideas and techniques raise their work to the level of art. But at their core, both photography and typography have a pragmatic function. The aesthetic component is separate…

thanks to ‘willem@fontanel’ for pointing me to this amusing (and surprisingly useful) website, where an ‘ex-font designer-turned-lawyer’ takes the time to explain the mysteries of typography to his fellow ‘suits’… enjoy: typography for lawyers

…when I see straight quotes, it’s like watching a movie where the boom microphone drops into the frame from above. Nothing looks more amateurish…
