and the odour of nostalgia…
an amusing and ironic brandbook for the man with the white beard, from the quietroom… these jokey things are often poorly done but this one is actually almost believable

…instead I found a way to simulate the effect I wanted. I defined weights for each pair of cities as a function of the Euclidean distance between them and the number of friends between them. Then I plotted lines between the pairs by weight, so that pairs of cities with the most friendships between them were drawn on top of the others. I used a color ramp from black to blue to white, with each line’s color depending on its weight. I also transformed some of the lines to wrap around the image, rather than spanning more than halfway around the world…
beautiful data visualisation project from ‘paul butler’ an intern at facebook, see a hi-res version also here
and now for something completely different… look at these funky little dioramas, a street scene at the shibuya crossing in tokyo, life on amsterdam’s canals, in the swiss alps or late night in the disco, in fact they are a series of crazy little brooches which have been created by my wife ‘femke’
the scenes are all contained in little boxes (about the size of a matchbox) and the first series have just been completed and will be going on sale in a small shop in amsterdam, she plans to make many more too in the near future
if you’re interested in buying one let me know and i’ll put you in touch, only two weeks till christmas… oh yeah did i mention that my clever wife made them? #proud
in a world full of blogs, just about any project comes complete with a ‘making of’ series these days…
here’s a really nice one from the late 60’s on a zebra-crossing on ‘abbey road’ london, very nice (photographer unknown) with thanks to ‘krijn van noordwijk’…
