out of office day

i will be away from my desk all day today, defying the heatwave and an estimated 600+ entries, as a jury member for the dutch theater poster awards 2010, you can reach me by phone if necessary and it’s business as usual on tuesday…

gold leaf, push pins & string

i was back in the photostudio yesterday with my good friend ‘ruud baan’ shooting two new images (in one day) for the dutch national ballet, a busy day, too warm too little time but plenty of fun…

the two new productions are ‘sleeping beauty’ and a triple bill ‘strong voices’, the sleeping beauty one we decided to translate into an over-the-top almost kitsch, abstract gold sun to depict the moment she awakes and for strong voices the idea was to create a sound wave pattern (inspired by the image below) but then in real life

i created a maze pattern out string in the studio limbo and painted the top & bottom sections on the string black to create a graphic wave form with the remaining white string sections, a very ambitious plan which required a lot more time than was available yesterday, the dancer we worked with ‘matthew golding’ was great and we are very pleased with the result, more news soon…

messages from asia

the posters shown here (from my dutch national ballet series) are being featured in an international poster exhibition and book ‘messages to the world’ organised by the ‘vidak’ (visual information design association of korea) opening in shanghai on the 1st of july, the following website may or may not provide more info for those interested, depending mainly on how many languages you can read…

time capsule

what a great little story this is: a time capsule of poster design from 1959

a section of tunnel in the london underground which has been hidden since the late 50’s has recently been rediscovered in ‘notting hill gate’, this was obviously the era prior to the period when photography became a dominant medium in advertising…
