me news

message carrier

yet another name that i was not familiar with: french graphic designer and illustrator/artist alain carrier, who is particularly remembered for his ‘humanitarian cause’ posters

here’s a selection of the posters and logos which caught my eye… the series on africa for ‘air afrique’ still look incredibly modern

many thanks to my mate ‘harm’ for pointing me towards this one, after visiting an exhibition currently taking place in sarlat, france

graphisme dans la rue

that the word ‘oeuvre’ is french doesn’t seem like a coincidence when you see the work of graphic designer fanette mellier, i’ve blogged her before but a fresh look proved that a second mention is definitely worth it…

each project shows a remarkable consistency in style and approach with all of the previous ones and it all exudes a real air of fun, plenty of images and not too many words, have a look for yourself…

minotaur

graphic designer ‘vaughan oliver’ was one of the people who inspired me to become a designer myself, he has been the face of 4AD records from the start for more than 20 years and was in fact their very first employee… vaughan was recently commissioned to make a definitive box-set of all of the pixies oeuvre (which he did together with some of his students from the RCA) and the result can be seen (not very clearly) here below

the whole looks very ‘4AD’ but somehow almost perhaps a parody of his own work, it all looks a bit too much and it is what i expected it to look like, which is a shame… he also collaborated with long-standing partner photographer ‘simon larbelestier’

the image of korea

i received an email this week with a large pdf file from korean designer mister han changkyu and although the mail was a little difficult to understand i believe he wanted to share his work with me, so here they are (my selection)

the posters all have rather poetic titles such as ‘be warm hearted’ and ‘the beauty of line’ and the aesthetic is so completely different to the one my western eyes are trained with that i find it very difficult to judge them at face value… the mix of colour, found objects (classical statues and ceramic pots etc.) and a lack of a large central ‘focal point’ in many of them is however very interesting, thanks for sharing…

type casting

design duo ‘non format have updated their work, the video for the chap’s ‘even your friends’ is their first forray into motion work and although it’s a typical kind of idea that a graphic designer would think up when making a video, i think it works great, just perfect for the ‘you tube-iphone-ipad’ generation

the ‘david bowie’ inspired typography piece shown below is also very interesting, but when put on a t-shirt it becomes a bit pretentious to me… one of those shirts that says ‘hey look everyone i’m a graphic designer’
