the documentary-like images were shot in the workshops and studios of the amsterdam music theater featuring the actual staff at work, by my colleague from the dutch national ballet designer ‘sander van der duin’ and myself…
…he often shot on the sly, his camera concealed in a paper bag with a hole in it…
fascinating picture series made by young apprentice photographer stanley kubrick in late 40’s new york, particularly interesting are the images that seem to have been an influence on scenes in his films later in life…

four posters we have just created for the ‘amsterdam music theater’ for their annual ‘open day’ when the building and stages are open to the general public in the city,
this years theme was ‘crafts’ i.e. all of the many talented people who work backstage making costumes, weaving wigs, designing sets and contributing in all kinds of ways to the final performances on stage, but who are often not seen or understood, we decided to portray ‘the hands that do the work’
the pictures were shot by ‘sander van der duin’ and myself… we deliberately chose a different style for the imagery to emphasise the fact that these posters are not intended to communicate a dance/opera performance but a wholly different kind of event
