early color

the ‘jewish historical museum’ in amsterdam has just opened an exhibition on the work of new york photographer saul leiter called: new york reflections, the exhibition focuses on his street photography from the 50s, shot largely in colour…. even though i haven’t been yet it has got to be worth the trip…

if you can’t make it to amsterdam before march 2012 here’s an impression (below) of what to expect… and here’s an interview with the man himself

stile industria

arguably one of the most important (if perhaps less recognised) nations when it comes to the ‘modernism’ movement in graphic design during the 20th century is italy, better known examples are probably, the work of ‘max huber’ for such clients as ‘pirelli’ and ‘borsalino’ amongst others

another less well-known example is the short-lived late 50s/early 60s design magazine ‘stile industria’ whose covers bear an unmistakeably modernist, eclectic style from such names as ‘max huber’, ‘bruno munari’, (dutchman) ‘bob noorda’ and ‘enzo mari’… see this great collection of the resulting covers

translated from an original post i wrote for ‘fontanel’ this week…

can cam

…the highest path represents the sun’s “peak”, when it appears highest in the sky, which takes place on 21 June in the northern hemisphere. After this day the trails grow shorter and climb lower in the sky, revealing the approach of winter. together, the 23.5-degree tilt in the Earth’s axis and its revolution around the sun are what give us our seasons. This striking image illustrates these changes and reveals the passage of time…

‘justin quinell’ fromthe UK made a makeshift pinhole camera using a beer can, which he then left outdoors for three months the result is a fascinating image of the sun’s trajectroy across the sky during that period…

it reminds me a lot of the work of german photographer michael wesely whom i blogged about back in ’07

shoebox

interesting iphone camera app which takes advantage of ever-increasing camera quality to make provide a scan mechanism for converting old (analogue) images to digital using ‘edge detection and perspective correction… …after scanning, you can quickly crop, straighten, rotate your photo, as well as record the stories behind the photographs by adding captions, dates, and tags…’ (via thijs van exel)
