new visual proportions

…the available size of a iPhone screen is width 320 × height 460 pixels at portrait orientation after excluding the status bar, or points if we are talking about the Retina display. If you divide 460 by 44 you get a remainder of 20. Divide by 11 and you get a remainder of 9. 460 cannot be divided into equal parts of 11 nor 44. The vertical rhythm is corrupt…

interesting article from print/online designer ‘aentan’ who finds the grid system used for the iPhone iOS flawed…

bno-nline

the dutch designers association have refreshed their online presence this week, it seems to have taken a long time and was well overdue considering how outdated the previous website was, so well done

the format they have chosen is magazine-like, which is very much ‘de rigeur’ at the moment but has been done with somewhat more ‘panache’ by others such as fontanel for example, this one seems a bit messy and clunky in comparison..

99 problems, but a pitch ain’t one

…anyone with an illegally downloaded copy of Photoshop can call themselves a designer and enter a 99designs’ competition. It really is that easy. Forget that degree you’ve worked hard for. Forget the years of honing your craft. Forget everything. Amateur design has it’s place (college) but doesn’t belong in business. It’s harmful…

there is a lively discussion on spec work and ’99 designs’ in particular, over at anti-spec at the moment… tough one this… i can see both sides of the argument
