me news

nijhof & lee @ bijzondere collecties

i attended a small, private reception on friday afternoon at the now defunct nijhof & lee bookshop in the staalstraat, the event was like a who’s who of dutch design with many respected names from several generations present

the occasion was that the owner ‘warren lee’ had something to share: despite many reports about the shop closing down the good news is that it is, in fact, continuing

due to open later this year as a store within the special collections department of the university of amsterdam (where the recent ‘irma boom’ book design exhibition was held) warren will be running the shop and it should be ready for business later this summer, the obvious advantage could be tie-ins with special exhibtions on specialised design & typography related subjects

yes we can

time to say goodbye to the boss? my friends at ‘fontanel’ have just launched a new (independent) job site in the netherlands called unsurprisingly ‘fontanel jobs’

at the moment it is not very active, but people can sign up for news updates and follow them on twitter, aimed at the younger design audience it is, i think, a very welcome addition to the current online offerings for designers at the start of their careers, good luck guys…

book things

i got some great news late on friday afternoon; for the second consecutive year we have been selected for the annual dutch best book design competition 2010, this time not one but with two books, again from the ‘dingen’ children’s books series (transport things & amsterdam things)

looks like we didn’t win the ‘smallest entry’ prize this year though, there appears to be a few even smaller ones amongst the 33 selected books… i’m very flattered although it seems odd to select new books in an existing series, especially one which has already won before…

the selected designers are, amongst others: irma boom, joost grootens, mevis & van deursen, hans gremmen, bockting ontwerpers, robin uleman and julia born
