an absolutely wonderful (concept for a) book on the workings of the mind, created with laser-cut paper pop-ups, by young designer moon brouwer, see more stuff on her own site…

no man’s land
one of my most favourite illustrators of the moment ‘blexbolex’ has created a new (3 colour) graphic novel due for imminent release from the lovely people at nobrow, his work is probably the closest modern equivalent to one of the all time great ‘graphic novel without words’ artists: belgian woodcutter and social activist frans masereel

congratulations to the winners of the european design awards 2012, once again the dutch are very strongly represented, although i must say that like the past few years i find the level of the winning entries a bit ‘all over the place’ to say the least… there doesn’t seem to be a strong viewpoint on what the best of the best is… personally this is also a reason for me not to enter the competition

one of the projects we are currently working on is a large historical reference book for one of my favourite authors and clients: dad, i’ll post some more info and images about this fascinating project as it progresses
van toorn 80
last saturday i attended an event in amsterdam to celebrate the 80th birthday and long career of celebrated dutch designer ‘jan van toorn’
the event featured a series of lectures including a charming one by ex-student and friend ‘lies ros’ plus a great 40 minute talk by british design critic and author ‘rick poynor’ who took the time to explain just why ‘van toorn’ is such a notable practitioner of our profession, which i thoroughly enjoyed
the afternoon ended with a small reception and a beautiful reproduction edition (by ‘de ruimte’ designers) of van toorns’ classic 1972 ‘mart spruijt’ people calendar, a nice gift for those who were patient enough to sit through all of the talks…
