new (and old) book
the façade book finally arrived back from the printers at the end of last week, at least the book block did, the covers are being made from the billboards featured in the book itself…
some of the billboards are still in use, so we will be having the covers cut to size and made in small batches as the recycled billboard covers become available during the coming few weeks…
the first series have been made with the red & blue hoardings from ‘martijn engelbregt’ shown below, i will post some more images to ‘me work’ during the coming week… the book is available for sale in a limited run of 500 copies, we are also doing a window display in a local bookshop next week, most probably using the plastic letters i made for the book and some old recycled bits of design stuff made earlier for the project…
new books and the ‘best books’ book
it’s been a good week for books, my own latest book design ‘façade’ arrived back from the printers on friday and i attended the presentation of the dutch best book designs 2009 in the stedelijk museum on friday night, this is the book (shown above and designed by hansje van halem) and the book for which i was selected can be seen here (actually posted and designed more than a year ago, but it was entered into the competition by the publisher and not by me, i’ll admit i’m very proud of this as i’ve always wanted to have some of my work in that ‘best books’ book series which i rate very highly personally… that’s enough mentions of the word ‘book’ in one post although the following post may just also feature the ‘b’ word…
me technicolour dreamcoat
inspired by the ‘façade’ book project on recycled advertising billboards, which i’ve just completed (more on that later) i recently decided to have a go myself and thought it would be fun to try and make a ‘recycled’ jacket, to wear at the book launch next week, the billboard was kindly donated by my friends at ‘koeweiden postma’ who had recently used this large red and white one to welcome a client who had moved into an adjacent office space… the jacket was very kindly made (with considerable effort and many broken needles) by my wife’s aunt ‘agnes eenenaam’ (thanks again!) and arrived back this week… looks kinda funky he? well i think so…
although it turns out that the book launch is taking place on a different day than expected, so i’ll miss it unfortunately and the jacket is actually so stiff that it’s almost impossible to move in! still it was good fun to try and i now have a much better idea how to produce a new version in the future and what materials do or don’t work…
