congrats to my buddies from ‘fontanel’ on the launch of their very first book: fontanel finals, beautifully designed by drawsords (rob van den nieuwenhuizen) with several alternative cover images

the book features a great overview of some of the most recent design talent from dutch art schools plus a few background short stories from seasoned professionals like joachim baan, femke agema, kali nikitas and… me

…take your time. Understand yourself, your abilities and your position. Don’t be overly aware of the design hypes and trends, and create your own rules. Take your time and love whatever happens, every little step is so important, even the small ones. Be aware for what, for who and why you do the work you do. Always have a dialogue with your commissioners. And always work on your own ideas and projects as well. And don’t forget to occasionally present them to the world…

i came across this old image in the city archives this week: our building has been replaced with a newer version and the little café on the opposite corner has bene long gone, but for the rest surprisingly little has changed around here in the past 100 years… on the outside at least
although strangely the water level appeared to be much higher 100 years ago, or has the street been raised?

on a side note another image i found (above) revealed that my office was, according to the credits ‘a heroin café which burned out in 1980’ (the graffiti on the door reads h-block free now!)

…in 1916, the Doves Type was seemingly lost forever after it was thrown into the River Thames. Almost 100 years later, and after spending three years making a digital version, designer Robert Green has recovered 150 pieces from their watery grave…
