do or dare

just a few images (i know not very exciting) from the talk i did on monday: designer ‘herman van bostelen’ did the logical thing and decided not to prepare his talk at all, not bring any work to show and just see how it went, it went well he’s an entertaining talker i think, young studio ‘hoax’ did a talk on ‘fanzine culture’ and i (stupidly) was hoping to rely on technique, the idea was to hide behind a large monitor and talk to the audience via the safety of my screen, in the end there wasn’t a screen so i had to skip my presentation and just show some work, oh well, that’s life…. still it’s always nice to meet the next generation and talk about our profession

accidental aesthetics

…it was an economic bargain that significantly defined the aesthetic terms of comic books: cheap paper, cheap printing, and four-color separations that could not hide their limitations. These accidental aesthetics governed the experience of comics for generations, were appropriated for fine art in the 1960s, and today fall into the “retro” category of graphic design…

why didn’t i think of this: i really love this blog which takes a close up look at old comics, in fact i even once designed an identity that looked like this…

it’s a hoax

one of the teams who are also doing a talk at the HKU seminar on ‘self confidence’ i have been invited to on monday is ‘hoax’ a young start-up by three students from the art-school whom i taught barely a year ago… they have created a pretty smart-looking portfolio in a very short space of time, taking an apparent focus on typography-based work with a really nice ornamental/graphic touch to it, like this poster (shown above) which i really like

talk about self-confidence… i would never have had the guts to start for myself straight out of art school, students take note: it can be done… looking forward to hearing their experiences so far
