all of the pictures in the world

i spent a large part of this week not working (at least not earning cash) but spending time at ‘picnic’ and getting inspired about the future… well it was worth it

i’m still ruminating on some of the ideas and their implications… below is some of the funky stuff i saw, a great many of the speakers were concentrating on convergence of web 2.0 technology, like this amazing project from microsoft which utilises everybodys’ online images to create an image map of the whole world (at least in theory) the videos are a bit corporate and less interesting than the talk i saw, have a look here

jonathan harris is an artist who explores how we interact on & offline, read about him here… his project
we feel fine
in particular was great to see…

there was also a presentation about touch-screen technology, how about this i want one now!

atelier tipografic ‘romania olanda’

i’ve been invited to take part in a show ‘the favourites’ of 25 contemporary dutch graphic designers in Romania in late November

the exhibition will be opened by the dutch ambassador in the ‘UnArte Gallery’ at the Universitea Nationale de Arte in Bucharest (nov 19th)

the list of designers comprises (amongst others) Piet Gerards, Mieke Gerritzen, Lucas de Groot, Melle Hammer, Reynoud Homan, Erik Kessels, René Knip, Jacques Koeweiden, de Designpolitie, Richard Niessen, Lex Reitsma, Lies Ros, Gerard Unger, Chris Vermaas, Thomas Widdershoven

now i’m just wondering how long it takes to drive to romania from amsterdam…

tipografia sicilia #2

i spent some time shooting random typography in sicily whilst on holiday recently and i tried to find some ‘typical’ italian type styles, i found there isn’t really one typical style but there were several sorts that recurred regularily, based more on typical eras rather than any specific national style, although these sans-serif condensed specimens seem somehow very ‘italian’ to my mind

back to basics

here are two images of simple black & white posters i found lurking around on an old hard-disk just now, the left one i shot in ’03 (for a horror film festival) and the other in ’04 (for a design degree show) i’ve no idea who made them, but they both made me look twice…
