as i mentioned back in september, the ‘designpolitie’ are designing the next dutch design annuals together with ‘dick bruna’ (the creator of miffy) and i received a very novel call for entries for it today, they have made a little ‘miffy style’ children’s book… a good idea that works very well, i suspect they will get a lot more entries than usual due to this direct-mail piece… form & function all rolled into one: designers love books… smart thinking
‘the serif’ posted a link to this site today, featuring german posters, these are the ones that caught my eye the most, looking at posters as thumbnails on internet is usually a good way to judge their ‘stopping power’ i usually find. if they work at such a small size, they will work on the street too…
i know it’s probably not a very good idea to promote other designers on my site, but this guy is definitely worth a quick mention: robin uleman
he used to work at ‘dietwee’ in utrecht and he has a very strong/simple ‘dutch design’ feel to his work, check him out here, he’s also a nice bloke…
my best mate steve, in london, has just directed a commercial for guinness (made for the african market), apparently it’s not supposed to be online anywhere, however if anything’s not supposed to be online it’s usually on ‘you tube’ anyway… so here you go… nice one mate :) proud of you
it seems like the current wave of nostalgia for old penguin books is still going on, a new book entitled ‘seven hundred penguins’ has just been published, featuring some of the classic covers
incidentally it also features a lot of really bad ones too, not all of penguins production was good… even in the ‘glory days’
