marlon brando: ‘hey stella!, hey stella!, hey stella!…’

the very identical stone twins have been working for the amsterdam-based theater company toneelgroep amsterdam for a while now and for their ‘TAM2’ (young director’s productions) have devised a poster frame that is sent to various artists and designers to make their own piece of art or an interpreatation of the production in question, this time it is ‘a streetcar named desire’ memorable to most for the fabulous film starring ‘marlon brando’ and ‘vivian leigh’

stone twin garech sent me one and very kindly asked me to take part, the only restriction was that it should be made on the physical paper and not in the computer, which i thought was great because it made me get away from the ‘grey box’ for a while… he also sent a number of examples from the previous series to give a flavour of what had been done so far (see above)

one the key scenes in the film (see here) features ‘stanley’ calling to his wife ‘stella’ on a balcony, this is what i chose to interpret, stanley is a working class ‘brute’ and ‘stella’ the daughter of a well-to-do family, so the logos i appropriated seemed right in more ways than one… the stone twins were very pleased with the result and mentioned that it will be used in the printed program book too, thanks guys it was fun to do… the complete selection will be exhibited in the ‘toneelschuur’ haarlem from the 29th of may for two weeks during the production… i’m looking forward to seeing the rest…

[update] it would appear that this has something to do with adidas’ new green campaign, sure it all looks very ‘cool’ but what on earth has this got to do with plastic trainers?

old moves

this is an old poster sketch for the dutch national ballet, which was never used, i had been working with the wrong title (dumb) and they thought the image was a bit too weird… that’s precisely what i liked about it myself (the headless man) the image was shot by ‘joris-jan bos’
