where next?

a small get-together in amsterdam in 2 weeks time: with the ‘stone twins’ & ‘jacques koeweiden’ amongst others, to discuss the state of logo design and what developments are taking place in our profession…

…do logos, by themselves, still have resonance/importance?… and where next?, a good question

(thanks to ‘garech & declan’ for the tip)

last things last

…so clients are – they must be – our partners. To those of you who hold yourselves aloof from things commercial, by virtue of academic posts, inherited wealth or vows of poverty, I say: ‘Good on you, dear people: do your thing, whatever that is.’ But as for myself and my sisters and brothers immersed in matters of commerce, we’ve been having a great time…

the ‘last things last’ essay from ken garland recently written as an addendum to his original first things first manifesto plus the notorious 2000 version; in which he addresses the misty issue of clients and our necessary relationship with them

a forthcoming book from unit editions aims to cover his career in detail and also worth a watch is his recent lecture at typo london, i was also taught briefly by ken garland back at art school in the mid eighties… a generous & original thinker

works that work

interesting new publishing initiative from peter bilak

a design magazine, but one that:
…looks beyond mere portfolios, a magazine dedicated to inspiration and observation, to conditions and contexts, a kind of National Geographic of design. We are interested in the manifestations of unexpected creativity in the real world. Practical, positive, detached from artists’ egos, showing just works that work, from around the globe…

the magazine is independent and they are looking for backers big or small.. spread the word

(my thanks to miss ‘anne miltenburg’ for the tip)

clarity and secrets

funny what you can come across on you tube sometimes…

three short interviews (made last year if i remember correctly) by a group of french design students visiting amsterdam, the subject was ‘poster design in amsterdam’ and the connection was the wonderful posters in amsterdam blog by ‘jarr (talking above)

secondly (above) the talented mister michiel schuurman whose quote … you only have one side of the paper so you can’t hide anything… really appeals to me

and finally me, although we didn’t have contact at the time these were made; it is interesting to see that we have similar views to share… although the interviews appear to have been heavily trimmed down here…

welcome home

visited yesterday with the family: the revamped and revitalised stedelijk museum

finally back (on the original site) after 10 years absence; it’s been too long… but it looks amazing and if you ask me now that the new (& much criticised) identity by mevis en van deursen has been implemented and started to come to life around the museum i think that it actually works really well (i had decided to not join the flood of negative comment on the logo until seeing the whole story)
