clever idea for a painting currently on show at the cncpt13 gallery in amsterdam: although it is illegal to celebrate the dalai lama’s birthday or paint his picture in tibet a dutch artist (airco caravan) had a painting created in several separate parts
…without knowing, 16 artists in China painted a part of the Dalai Lama. They were invited to produce ‘abstract’ impressionistic oil paintings, based on photos uploaded onto their websites. The pictures were pieces of the portrait, but were rotated and named ‘Curtains’, ‘Grandpa’, ‘Mango’ and the like. Together the Chinese painters created an illegal painting, symbolizing peace and unity in many different ways… it took her a half year to collect all of the pieces together (via ‘de volkskrant’)

last thursday i got to do a short interview with two interesting people: chris duffy, son of legendary photographer brian duffy and kevin cann official biographer to david bowie; both were briefly in amsterdam to open the bowie by duffy expo in foam and talk to the press…
it was great fun and i wrote a short article 3 questions for my friends at ‘fontanel’ which i will translate into english and post here next week (hopefully) as this one is dutch only…

the terrible twins ‘lernert & sander’ were recently asked to make a portrait of local fashion icon ‘bas kosters’ for a ‘volkskrant’ magazine article where he openly discusses (his) drug abuse and coming clean
they chose to work with occasional collaborator ‘jouk oosterhof’ and together they created this beautiful, sober series
