the latest edition of the dutch annual ‘best book design’ has just been published, this year designed by studio ‘sander boon’ which is a new name to me, although i do recognise some of the work in his portfolio

as usual the publication has been beautifully produced and the idea this time is that all of the winning books have been placed in order of their physical format, the enlarged macro-shots of details of the books work really well too, two minor criticisms: the coloured paper backdrops used to display the book covers however, seem a bit dated to me… and the book is perhaps a little bit chaotic to read through due to the picture editing, the exhibition runs from july the 1st through to late september, more details (in dutch only) on the stedelijk website

i finally managed to attend the ‘rietveld’ graduation show on the final day = today and as usual it was worth the trip, it’s still one of the strongest schools in the netherlands, the books being displayed in glass cases, with two opposing fans fighting to turn the pages (shown above) made me smile…

i found the graphics difficult to judge but the photography department featured some very strong work in my opinion… if you were too late, the showcase website might give you a good impression… unlike my crappy pictures (sorry it was very warm…) for example ‘jonas lund’ who got 50 women to do a ‘marilyn monroe’ pose from memory and ‘janneke van leeuwen’ with some beautiful spatial studies…

i promise not to say anything about him, there is already more than enough being said right now online, this series of slideshows are quite interesting though (click top right for the other ones…

nice outdoor/viral idea for a swedish bus company
