me news

good design, good business

many thanks to the aisleone blog for pointing me to this story about the amazing ‘geigy’ identity from the late 50’s and 60’s, a similar case to the famed ‘olivetti’ identity in terms of the quality applied to everything

and he is right when he says the book really is a ‘must have’ for designers… excellent stuff, the links he mentions are also worth a few clicks…

be a nose

artist ‘art spiegelman’ will be most remembered for his immensely popular graphic novel ‘maus’ documenting the holocaust through the eyes of a mouse family… i recently got hold of a new publication of his work, which is a (very faithful) facsimile reproduction of his personal skecthbooks over the past three decades entitled ‘be a nose’

the collection is a bundle (with a colourful thick elastic band holding them together) of three books (dated ’83, ’97 & ’07) spanning a large part of his career, the books have been beautifully reproduced including the linnen finish cover on one, torn pages, all the scuff marks from the original and each one at the actual size and together they give a fascinating insight into the mind of their creator… very nice…

a field guide to the stamps of the world

some lovely little designs and subdued colours on this poster from ‘tiny showcase

These stamps were inspired by various elements surrounding the culture of the countries, including the Swiss-born color theorist Johannes Itten, old French Tarot cards, the Brazilian boardwalk Copacabana, German designer Otl Aicher, Mayan patterns, the Swiss Alps, sweater patterns, and op artist Victor Vasarely.
