me news

tipografia siciliana

i realised that it may not be entirely clear that ‘me studio’ has temporarily relocated to a slightly warmer and better tasting location for a while: a small villa on the coast of the beautiful island of sicily, before it gets too hot and too many people arrive…

this is also another reason the blog has become a bit quieter than usual, it transpires we are actually staying in a seaside property belonging to a quite famous italian documentary photographer, i’ll post about him later this week, it was a new name to me… so i’ll say ‘ciao for now’ the pasta is calling me :)

the art of emptiness & the origin of design

interesting suggestion as to one of the possible origins of design as an entity in the fascinating book ‘white’ by japanese designer ‘kenya hara’ (lars müller publishers) which i am currently reading…

…surprisingly few rectangular objects exsist within nature with the exception of some mineral crystals, which are closer to perfect cubes. Modern science is, as we are well aware, built on the order discovered in nature, so it isn’t strange to find the mathematical principle of the square concealed there. Yet squares and rectangles are extremely unstable, which explains why they are so rare. Why then have people come to favor rectangular forms?

One possibility is the fact that if we break a big leafy object into two pieces using our two hands, we get a straight line, while a second break results in a right angle. Another possibility comes from the nature of gravity, which turns a hanging vine or string into a straight vertical line. We could speculate endlessly on such possibilities, but the fact remains that when sheepskins were turned into writing materials they were always cut into rectangles. This process may be understood as one of the origins of design…

weekend posters

the head coordinator of the weekend school ‘sofie blom’ sent me some images of the teaching session i did a week ago, so here they are…

the idea is to give kids from a, perhaps, less fortunate background inspiration about the types of profession they could choose and to help them understand that it is your own hands… our particular sunday session was about design & advertising

i have also enclosed some of the posters we designed together in a short time that afternoon, the kids had all been photographed (by co-volunteer and photographer ‘jaap stahlie’) i then helped them to use a quote of their own thinking as the basis for a poster campaign to promote the ‘weekend school’ to other kids… it as a very worthwhile experience on the whole… but it also reminded how tiresome 13 year-olds can be…
