wednesday was spent judging some 400+ posters for the annual ‘dutch theater poster awards’, it’s always fascinating (and quite unique) to see a years worth of poster design from one country all in one go in one space…
this year the graphic designers were quite heavily represented amongst the jury members (including my friends ‘lernert & sander’) which led to some difficult discussions during the day, on the whole i feel very happy about the final selection and the winner, more news as soon as the finalists are announced next month…
from time to time i get asked to send a short bio about my work for publishers or journalists explaining what i do, like most designers i find this really difficult to do without writing a lot of nonsense, finally i have a proper artists statement, here goes:
…my work explores the relationship between emerging sexualities and recycling culture. With influences as diverse as Nietzsche and John Cage, new combinations are generated from both simple and complex layers. Ever since I was a student I have been fascinated by the theoretical limits of relationships. What starts out as vision soon becomes debased into a hegemony of greed, leaving only a sense of what could have been and the possibility of a new beginning. As spatial forms become transformed through emergent and critical practice, the viewer is left with a statement of the edges of our future…
what do you think? why not try and write some arty bollocks for yourself, it is really easy and definitely a load of bollocks…

a hilarious proposal for a new dutch national tricolor flag from willum geerts from 2007 and seen during anti arts-cuts demonstrations this weekend in the hague… (via maurice scheltens)
