hey hang on a minute… what’s going on here??? a guy called ‘john mcgraw’ says konica minolta copiers are superb and gives them a double thumbs up… problem is that’s me, not him… i need to call these people i think!

frietag bags recently organised a design contest asking designers to design a truck tarpaulin that will be used on a truck for 5 years then cut into bags, this was my entry (the deadline has just passed)
the briefing was not to make a commercial design but something that reflected old style transport graphics (which apparently is a disappearing art-form due to the rise of advertising on truck ‘tarps’)
my idea was to make a modern variation on ‘dazzle painting’ which was used by the british navy during the second world war to disguise war ships, the aim was, that by painting these incredible patterns on freight and battle ships, it would make it more difficult for u-boats to discover the orientation of the ship and thus more difficult to hit the ship in the right place with a torpedo, i’ve always thought that this effect looked amazing even though it was never meant to look great, just confuse…
the briefing was ‘transit’ so i incorporated the text ‘i can move, move, move any mountain’ from a hit track by early 90’s dance act ‘the shamen’… i have no idea why i chose that song… it’s not even a very good track… still i reckon that this pattern would look great cut into pieces for freitag bags, which is the actual purpose of course… i wonder whether the jury will agree…
my friends ‘stefan’ and ‘theo’ from VBAT have just completed a charity project for the ‘volunteer shop’ in amsterdam, that opened yesterday evening… the whole thing was done virtually for free, the idea is very simple and charming
it is based on a rectangle with a measurement of 20 x 70 cm, and everybody was asked to donate pieces of carpet, wood and other materials which were then put together as a patchwork, people also donated old pots of paint that were used to create the wall squares and the ‘andreas crosses’ (the symbol of amsterdam) were used as a graphic element to make the modular furniture and the crosses on the walls that support the chalkboards announcing the available volunteer jobs… good work lads…
designer ‘luis mendo’ from good inc. popped round for coffee yesterday and he brought me a copy of a magazine he just made for the colophon 2007 magazine seminar looks interesting, perhaps i’ll go along to the 2009 edition…
