the skin project

the ‘skin project’ appears to be a few years old by now, but was completely new to me: a whole book, tattooed word for word, on a lot of people all over the world (thanks to ‘pepijn’ for the tip)

parramsterdam

the ‘new york times’ has an online guide to ‘cool’ amsterdam (i vaguely remember a time when amsterdam was perhaps a bit ‘cool’, i think…) with some funky illustrations by local hero mister parra (thanks to ‘gius’ for the tip)

time flies

this is a typographic installation and viewing platform (combined) for a newly opened site for roman excavations that are taking place in houten in the netherlands

the message: ‘as one is working on history, times inevitabily passes’ made with small black and white 3d cubes becomes legible as you move past it… nice (link via the bright blog)

codex gigas

whilst doing research for a new book jacket design (based in medieval england) i was pointed in the direction of an incredible book which lies in stockholm called the ‘codex gigas’ this is what wikipedia has to say:
The Codex Gigas (English: Giant Book) is the largest extant medieval manuscript in the world… created in the early 13th century… in Bohemia… now preserved in Stockholm, where two librarians are needed to lift it. It is also known as the Devil’s Bible due to a large illustration of the devil on the inside.

there is also an official site where the entire 75kg book can be viewed in detail

legend has it that the book was made by one monk/scribe who sold his soul to the devil and scientific research seems to confirm that the whole enormous book was, indeed, written and illustrated by one single person… a feat that took some thirty years to complete… amazing
