building blocks

i spent the day in the hague at the art academy with dylan yesterday, working on our CD case typo project (see earlier post this week) we got the CCTV installation in the building to record our endeavours during the day, it’s coming along nicely although we still aren’t entirely sure what it’s going to be… which is part of the fun, after all… why experiment if you know what is going to happen?

penguin miniatures

here’s a miniature idea from evening tweed, it’s not big and it is clever

A book-arts experiment – new miniature novels housed inside their literary parents. Future books in the series include ‘Littler Women’, ‘Gulliver’s Travel’ and ‘None Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’.

more new books

two recently published books that have somehow landed on my desk this week:
the latest in the fabulous ‘poster series’ by ‘lars müller’ publishers (number 19) entitled ‘head to head, political posters’ the book is obviously timed to coincide with the enormous hero-worship surrounding ‘obama’ and the way graphics have played such a large role in his campaign, some interesting parallels have been drawn in the book between his (& others) posters compared to much older campaigns (such as the kennedy poster shown above) as usual the book is well researched and produced

the second is the latest in the ‘design & designers’ series by french publisher ‘pyramyd’ on amsterdam designers ‘machine’ it’s good to see all of their major projects together & to be able to see a common thread through their work despite the enormous diversity of styles they choose to employ, although it’s a real shame this volume only deals with ‘machine’ and doesn’t include the whole ‘dept’ period which was perhaps, to my mind, more interesting in terms of their impact on the local scene back in the 90’s…

soft and elegant

american designer oz durham contacted me regarding my little critique (see ‘me stuff’) on the ‘hema’ logo (written back in 2007) this was his reaction:
Well I personally like the idea to house the "hema" logo in the square blocks. I think the colors works well, Gives it a soft and elegant appearance. Minimalism can be so powerful. Oh, I’m Oz. I was just checking out your website. Good stuff.

thanks for the reaction oz, i must admit that most reactions i have received so far have also been negative (i.e. people who disagreee with me) including of course, the boys from ‘koeweiden postma’ (who made the new identity)
