part of the vibrant culture of west and central africa

Wax prints are prestigious cloths with a high social value… Cloths are also widely used as a powerful mass communication media, for commemorative, political, religious, social and other message conveying purposes.

these stunning patterns are actually fabric designs, from a dutch company called vlisco who is the top brand amongst purveyors of textiles to chique african ladies since 1846… the patterns feature some weird and wonderful details, such as the playstation consoles shown here, to read more see the original, fascinating blog post where i first came across the story (thanks to ‘angela’ the author)

time capsule

barbara bedick was only 19 when her dad drove her and her 14 year old brother to woodstock to see what it was like…

interesting small section of old ‘super8’ film showing hippies at woodstock, shot by a teenage girl, what i find interesting i guess is precisely the fact that nothing special is being filmed, just random people enjoying their day…

lost and ironed

the ‘lost & found’ evenings in amsterdam usually have interesting invites, like the latest one which is blank piece of card with the instruction ‘spray window cleaner on the front and iron the reverse’ so i did, this turned out to be a lot of effort as it merely revealed two letters ‘L’ and ‘F’ caused by some reaction from the chemicals in the window with the paper, nice idea but the result could surely have been more rewarding…

several of the other projects by it’s maker, young designer jelte van abbema certainly are, the sugar cube letters reminded me of my own version (see ‘me work’) and his fungus type was an idea we were actually going to try several years back, although we gave up when it looked like the effect we wanted wasn’t actually possible… we were wrong it seems

new ‘things’

we are busy completing two new titles in the ‘dingen’ kids books series (see ‘me work’ for more info): one about transport and the other is an amsterdam special

the amsterdam special will also be featuring in a larger photography exhibition taking place early next year, more news on that soon…

the ‘monodot’ identity was proof printed this morning and is looking great, needs a few tweaks but i’m very pleased so far…
