I visted the penguin book sexibition in the hague today and
apart from some recent titles with interesting hand drawn typography printed on the book ends there wasn’t very much stuff I hadn’t already seen elsewhere, a bit disappointing

there were a few preliminary sketches by people like jan tschischold who spent some time as art director at penguin and modified the logo (for the better) and several

unusual dutch titles brought published under penguin, the
book called ‘penguin by design’ by phil baines is a better reference for anyone interested in the history of penguin book design, the thing I missed most was the fabulous green ‘crime series’ from the 60’s designed by germano faccetti, one of the best art directors who worked for penguin in my opinion

these sparse white posters with lists of names are hanging around amsterdam this week, it turns out that it is part of an art project that deals with ‘illegal’ immigrants who have died trying to enter fortress europe, the whole awful list including cause of death numbers some 7000 names and can be seen on the stedelijk museum site I wonder wether people will actually read them…

a retrospective exhibition about penguin books (to coincide with phil baines’ fantastic book) that was in London last year has now moved to the The Hague and can be seen for the next few months, here (interesting logo they have) I may go this weekend
