best european logo…
the winners of the eulda 2007 have been announced… the top one is the overall european winner, it’s difficlut to comment on the overall housestyle and how it’s been applied but the idea of making an illustration with a barcode is definitely not new… the subject is very suitable but still…
the lower one was the UK winner, which i find baffling, a dutch bookstore chain has had a similar logo for years, however apart from the idea, i think the execution is very poor; both the red and the blue one… the juries criteria appear to have been very ‘wide’
it does what it says on the pack
this quaint little sign that can be found all over amsterdam is typically dutch (it’s a traffic light button for cyclists) and it lies somewhere in the middle between an icon and a ‘how to’ instruction drawing, the style is a bit quirky and retro but it also works very well at the same time, when i stop on a bike and press the button i always realise that i am imitating the image exactly…
google earth ‘the early years’
i was looking at images of my house on google earth, today and looking around on the web i came across a new dutch site
wat was waar that documents old archive images and maps, there was a city map dated 1834 that surprisingly fitted exactly over the google earth image, showing how accurate people were in city planning even then and amazingly i came across an old black & white RAF reconaissance image shot during the war (1944), to my surprise the quality is virtually the same as google earth… to give you an idea of the scale: amsterdam central station is just out of view (top right) and the two buildings bottom right are the royal palace and the ‘nieuw kerk’ on dam square
de best verzorgde boeken 2006
paid a quick visit to the ‘best book design’ exhibition in the stedelijk museum today, all good quality but as usual the same kinds of books generally get nominated, the annual report 2006 for the stedelijk museum itself made by ‘richard niessen’ and ‘esther de vries’ was one of the most beautiful and original entries in my opinion…
