i managed to scrounge free tickets to attend the pinic event in amsterdam again this year, after the first day my conclusion is that the event is much better organised and much more interesting this year, i heard some inspiring speakers this afternoon and saw some funky little gadgets, like this one pictured below…

all participants have been provided with a wireless chip on a keychain this year which activates all kinds of gimmicks around the site, this tea cup on a table turned into a computer interface when it read my chip and googled all kinds of information about me online which was then projected onto the table… simple but inspiring example of new technology…
one of the disadvantages of being a typography nerd, is that it tends to occupy a lot of your time, even on holiday… i’ll be posting a selection of favourites in the next few days, meanwhile here a few images from sicily that are (almost) not typo-related but which i liked
the first two images were not related but seem to fit each other perfectly…

not sure whether the one below was a shop-demo thingy or ‘accidental art’

the ‘faded man’ took on a special meaning for me as i spotted it in palermo ‘the maffia capital’ and the final images what’s that all about? just an early christmas present tip, if anyone’s wondering what to get me: a mercedes-benz ‘unimog’ all-terrain truck will do fine (thanks!)

my friend pam sent me these pics she took in verona, italy… the location is the house of julia (you know from romeo + julia) it’s been turned into a sort of shrine much like jim morisson of the doors’ grave in paris… people have stuck bits of paper on a wall, scrawled their names in grafitti, chained padlocks to the gate and stuck chewing gum on the wall with their names written on it… how weird…

my good friend sallie in london just mailed me this:

a gigantic, life-like statue of a man swimming through the grass has been unveiled on the bank of the river thames. the statue, complete with tattoo, was commissioned by ‘the discovery channel’ to advertise its new reality show, ‘london ink’
