amsterdam in letters

anyone familiar with central amsterdam, may be aware of the incredible range and diversity of typography styles which can be found on buildings all over the place… local photographer ‘maarten helle’ has released a book containing his eclectic image collection on this very subject

more info here, incidentally i came across the geometric tile-typography on the front of my own studio in the book, which isn’t old but which i had reconstructed a few years ago based on the original drawings from 1898…

CD packaging is not dead

although i must admit, there are less and less innovative examples around these days… this new design for ‘red snapper’, which i got hold of this week, however is fabulous… the album is entitled ‘a pale blue dot’ and features a very clean, minimal look; it refers to clothing/fashion labels with a plastic seal-cord running through the whole pack + CD, you need to break the seal to open it…

it is a nice follow-up to the previous ‘red snapper’ CD cover (dating back to ’03) also made by non-format which was a large jewel box sized cloth label, stitched entirely out of one piece of label material in red thread… very nice indeed

new books

eric kessels has released the seventh edition of his ‘in almost every picture’

The book tells the story of a Dutch woman whose life is seen from the point of view of a fairground shooting gallery.
In almost every picture #7 is a biography of one woman’s life from an unusual perspective, one which allows us to witness the times she lived in, as well as acting as a revealing look at the changing face of photography through the decades. At the age of 88 Ria van Dijk still makes her pilgrimage to the shooting gallery.
the book is being launched in the ‘foam’ photography museum next thursday…

john gall

interesting interview and some great book jackets by designer ‘john gall’ on this website

i particularly like the cover shown above for ‘lolita’ although it was rejected (incredibly) in favour of the one below, because it was felt to be too racy…

the cover next to the lolita one above was also rejected, except in this case i really do like the new one shown below it…
