the downside of internet

nijhof & lee…have reduced the space in many living rooms and many studio’s of artists and designers…
not the best news to end the year with: one of the world’s best type, design & photography bookshops (round the corner here in amsterdam) is closing it’s doors in a month
following the sad death of frank nijhof two years ago, it was always unclear how long warren would continue without his partner… well that time has come, fortunately the shop will remain open online and there is going to be a large clearance sale early next month (oh dear…) but the whole point of the shop for me was discovering books with your eyes, nose and hands… the way books should be discovered… so now where do i spend all of that money i don’t have?
behind the scenes

it turns out that ‘yul brynner’ was not only an actor but also an enthusiastic photographer who spent a lot of time documenting his own unusual life and making candid shots of the celebrities that surrounded him

his daughter has recently compiled a book divided up into four parts entitled yul which looks really interesting to me or as the blub puts it: a sensational portrayal of a time without paparazzi documenting every celebrity’s move.

for a brief time in the mid nineties surf dude ‘david carson’ a self-taught graphic designer, generated a lot of excitement with his cut and paste style of design, through magazines like ‘raygun’, it then became a style (like most) that was appropriated for advertising and quickly disappeared, it seems he is now back (working for several publications) and even launching a self-titled magazine, is it just me or does it already look really dated before we have even seen it?
