i was reminded this weekend of this wonderful story, the ‘cottingley fairies’ which was a figment of the imaginations of two young english girls in 1917 who took a camera into their garden and made some of the earliest examples of manipulated photography, the fairies were cardboard cutouts but were believed by many people (including some famous ones) to be real for many years, you can read more about the story (if you weren’t already familiar with it) and see the complete set of images on this website, the women finally confessed that it was a hoax in the 1980’s… although they continued to claim that the fifth image (not shown here) was genuine until both died
