sense and nonsense

i came across a series of pelican book covers onilne last week, these four for represent the range of styles they tried during the 1960’s from more formal and book-like covers to more illustrative and poster-like covers

the bottom two are from the early 60’s, the upper two late 60’s (as things moved into the hippie era) when type became more expressive, whereas the lower ones steer closer to the original ‘penguin’ grid designed by jan tschichold, the logo moved around as they apparently searched for a coherent style… i love the colour scheme and the transparent overlaying on the upper left one (from 1968)
